Oww! Team managers John McGraw and James Clayton undergo a painful leg wax

Legs were shaved and managers were covered in gunge as workers at Stafford logistics company Wincanton raised over £5,00o for STING during a special charity week.

Each year Wincanton carries out a series of fundraising events and activities and this year Stone-based charity STING was selected by the workforce to benefit.

During charity week at the site, the three shifts, which work 24 hours round the clock, carried out a range of fundraising activities to raise over £5,200 for the charity they had voted to support during the year.  An additional £1,000 is expected from a coast-to-coast team cycle event from members of the transport department that followed charity week.

Staff at all levels were involved in activities which included raffles, competitions and quizzes, as well as other fun events which saw managers having their legs shaved and getting it good with buckets of  lurid gunge! Very little was banned from the list of activities,  with even the managers prepared to put their dignity and welfare on the line to support STING.

STING member Peter Marenghi, who has been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, also works at Wincanton, and had nominated the charity for support during the year. Peter said: “I have worked at the site at Stafford for the last 18 months and was involved in a different capacity for several years previously.  I have always been impressed by the charity work and community involvement undertaken here, and was delighted when STING was recently chosen as Charity of the Year. The enthusiasm shown by everyone during Charity Week was amazing, and all of us at STING are so grateful for what their efforts will mean for our charity.”

Gez Prendergast, team manager at the Stafford site, has been helping to run the fundraising committee at the warehouse for the last three years. He said: “This year’s Charity Week has been a huge success. We’ve seen an increase in the amount of donations made, and more importantly for me, a much wider interest from the people who work at the Stafford facility in the chosen charity.  Members of STING have visited the site regularly since they were nominated, and having Peter work with us means that the enthusiasm and determination for this wonderful charity by the group members has been mirrored by people across our site.”
