The team at Stone’s Salvation Army charity shop are putting their best foot forward to walk a million steps – here’s why!
Shop manager, Debs Homer, has set up a Just Giving page to explain details of the challenge:
“As a Charity Shop raising funds every week for The Salvation Army, we have become very supportive of our local community, and the people that support our shop on a daily basis.
This year we have two local young men competing at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games and we want to show our support to them, on their quest to compete at the games. Both athletes are from Stone and both have competed in previous games.
Adam Burgess – C1M competed in Tokyo in the Olympic Games in 2021. He successfully reached the Olympic Final and just missed out on a medal coming a very close 4th!
Joe Clarke – K1M competed in the Rio 2016 Olympic games, and achieved the ultimate prize of a Gold Medal!
Both athletes have contributed and supported very much to our local community, particularly to our local children, inspiring them to take up sport. As they both started out at our local canoe club as young boys and have worked hard to achieve what they have so far. Showing that we can achieve our dreams!
As our Summer Fundraising Event we decided to show our support to these two local athletes by walking “One Million” steps to support them whilst raising vital funds to enable the Salvation Army to continue the vital work they do day in, day out to help people in desperate need of support.
Our staff and volunteers will start counting our steps on Saturday 4th May and aim to complete our target on Wednesday 26th July 2024. We will have walked enough steps to reach the Opening Ceremony of the Paris Olympic Games where on the 26th July, Joe and Adam, will take part. Plus also enough steps to have followed every run down the Canoe Slalom Olympic course that they do!
We are very proud of our local athletes, and very proud to support the Salvation Army!
If you are able to show your support please donate via this page and help us show our athletes that we support them on their journey, and that we support the Salvation Army to carry on their daily support for those who need them.”
