Oulton First School has won an award for its efforts to boost recycling.
The school won the Let’s Recycle prize in the annual Green Awards run by Stafford Borough Council for their great efforts and progress in recycling throughout the school. Judges said: “With lots more recycling bins to hand and a recycling eco-mascot to help, recycling is becoming second nature to children at this school.”
The Best Newcomer award went to Stone Computers, who have “taken a lead in IT recycling, offering facilities which extend to any organisation across the country and includes all IT equipment. It’s great to receive this application from a local business with a national name, spearheading green business and green jobs in our area”.

And the rail improvements at Norton Bridge near Stone, currently being completed by Staffordshire Alliance, won the Business category for delivering a faster, more reliable railway. The Alliance also won the Wildlife prize for its efforts to reduce the impact of the significant works.
Councillor Frank Finlay, borough council cabinet member for environment and health, said: “It is wonderful to see the success of such contrasting schemes coming together under the umbrella of helping the environment and contributing to a more sustainable borough.”
The winners were decided in four main categories – Business, Community and Wellbeing, Youth and Education, and Public Sector. A number of special awards were also handed out and various other entrants were commended for their projects.
As well as Staffordshire Alliance, the ‘Public Sector’ award was won by the Borough Council’s recycling initiatives and Derrington Way Ahead scooped the ‘Community and Wellbeing’ section for a number of events in the village.
The awards were launched in 1996 and this year received more than 30 entries. The competition is open to all groups operating in the borough and has played a key role in the Council’s agenda on issues surrounding carbon reduction and sustainable development.
All the winners received their certificates from the Mayor of Stafford Borough, Councillor Peter Jones. A full list of award winners and their projects are available at www.staffordbc.gov.uk/green-awards
