Oulton has scooped a gold medal in its first year of entering the Heart of England in Bloom competition.
Stone may not have entered this year’s competition, but Oulton has stepped into the breach to continue the gold medal tradition!
Led by Oulton Communty Group with horticultural expertise provided by Martin and Elaine Robinson and financial support from Stone Rural Parish Council, the village’s efforts were rewarded after a visit by Bloom judges, including head judge Roger Bache, who was suitably impressed with the “massive community involvement to improving their environment”.
In his report, he mentioned Oulton Abbey and its playgroup, scarecrow festivals, village fete, active Women’s Institute, village hall, the involvement of Oulton First School and the local pubs and more.
“A sure-fire gold,” he said.
Among the work that has gone on to secure the gold award is “superb” planting at the village hall, with a new rocky wildlife haven; wildflowers to celebrate VE Day and a stunning golden and blue mix at the village hall to celebrate the Women’s Institute centenary. The judge was impressed with nicely positioned planters and baskets, not to mention the individual gardens of villagers. He also picked up on “exceptionally clean streets and park”, as well as the absence of litter, and admired unusual features, like the decommissioned phone box that has been turned into an information point.
Roger Bache said: “This is simply a beautiful village with a massive community commitment to improving their environment. Operating on a miniscule budget, all the planting is grown and maintained by volunteers. The whole village has come together to make this a sure-fire gold.”
Huge well done to Martin, Elaine and all the volunteers at Oulton.
