Peter and Gaynor from Buy and Save in Stone High Street served their last customers on Saturday before shutting up their shop for good after an amazing 42 years.
The local heroes are now enjoying a well-earned retirement after their decades of service to the people of Stone, first from a shop in Lichfield Street before they moved, 35 years ago, to their High Street store.
The couple marked their 40th anniversary in 2010 in typical style – with sweets for youngsters and slices of a huge anniversary cake for customers. Peter said at the time that he couldn’t believe how long he’d been trading in the town, adding: “I must be doing something right!”
Over 30 people have left their thoughts and best wishes for Peter and Gaynor on A Little Bit of Stone’s Facebook page. You can do the same – or leave a comment on this site at the bottom of this article. All comments will be passed on to Peter and Gaynor.
Michael Hayes said: “Absolutely top people, I hope they both realise how well respected they are not only in the town but by anyone that’s ever lived there. Reminds me of how sad I was when the Duffins TV repair and Purtons toys went. End of an era folks.”
Kris Grainger added: “They did a great service. Where will I get my films processed and my old-style safety razors from now? Loved how they were independent but still managed to undercut the supermarkets and if you were ever lacking the exact change they’d round it down for you. You’ll be missed guys!”
Aimo Aimison said: “Used the shop many times over the years. It felt like a cornerstone, and a place you never imagined not to be there. All the best to them in their retirement.”
Liz Mills said: “They leave a big hole in the community and caused a stir when they first opened in Lichfield St, long before the other cut price stores. Happy retirement.”
There will be an interview with Peter on the site soon but, in the meantime, all the very best to Peter and Gaynor from A Little Bit of Stone – the High Street just won’t be the same without them.

Well done Peter and Gaynor for your long service to the town and for challenging the patent drug companies on price maintenance. Its not only the people of Stone who owe a debt of gratitude. Put your feet up and have a long and happy retirement.
