Petition started against Westbridge development

An e-petition has been started today which calls on Stafford Borough Council to withdraw Westbridge Park as a site for mixed-use development from the Local Plan.

The petition – which is now live on the borough council’s website – has been created by town councillor Rob Kenney and has, at the time of writing, been signed by over 150 people.

Titled ‘Keep Westbridge Park Green’, the petition states:

“We ask that Stafford Borough Council withdraw their proposal from the Plan for Stafford Borough “Provision of mixed use development at Westbridge Park”. We do not want retail or housing development to be built on Westbridge Park. The Park hosts a number of festivals & events which are crucial to the local economy such as: the week long Summer Festival, the Food & Drink Festival, the Lions Fun day plus many other events.

“Westbridge Park is home to the Scout, Cubs and Beavers headquarters at the Pump House and also the Wells Bladen Guide headquarters used by Guides, Brownies and Rainbows. They also regularly use the park itself at their meetings. Westbridge Park is a recreational Green used by many sporting clubs. There is no other green area in Stone suitable to accommodate all of the above. Westbridge Park is Stone’s village green, the heart of its community and regularly used by all age groups. It forms part of the Trent Valley green corridor, an area of natural beauty.”

Earlier this week both the chairman of Stone Food and Drink Festival and of Stone Festival came out against the inclusion of Westbridge Park for development in the Local Plan.

  • I have lived in stone all of my life and feel that this is outrageous to build on Westbridge Park. This is a vital piece of open space that all the community of Stone use, please don’t take this away form us, you have already deterred good quality and variety of shops from staying/coming by charging too much rent etc., do you really want to spoil Stone altogether by making people by pass this lovely canal town?!

I really hope this is not a serious proposal to build on Westbridge park. .
How can this benifit the town?we do not need any more houses or supermarkets.
Please leave this lovely part of Stone alone, we like it just he way it is.
