A group of over 50 staff, family and friends from Pirehill First School in Stone have come together and are participating in a 5k mud run on September 15th to raise funds for Cancer Research on behalf of a colleague who has recently been diagnosed with the disease.
“Walmsley’s Warriors” are hoping to raise over £2,000 for the charity as a group following Louise Walmsley’s diagnosis in early 2019. Following surgery, Louise participated in a clinical trial, which would have only been made possible with the research and investigation such causes provide, which resulted in Louise being able to avoid undergoing gruelling chemotherapy.
Pirehill First School’s children have also joined in with the fundraising cause and recently participated in their own Race for Life, nearly all 300 of them, aged from 4 to 9. Each child was presented with their own medal for completing the race and raised £600 for the cause.
Emma Walton, organiser of the event and close friend of Louise told A Little Bit of Stone:
“When Lou was first diagnosed with this cruel disease, I felt pretty useless and didn’t know what I could do to help other than be there for her and do whatever little practical things I could.
Then, lying in bed awake early one Sunday morning, I had a thought to run a Pretty Muddy for Cancer Research on her behalf. We ran one together last year with a few others from work which was really good fun.
I messaged a few colleagues and it grew from there. We are now a group of over 50 people, including men and children, who are racing the 5k as Walmsley’s Warriors to get very muddy for an extremely important cause for our friend Lou. Most of us are wearing t-shirts in Lou’s favourite colour, royal blue, which has been printed with Walmsley’s Warriors in her honour. We are hoping to raise £2,000 as a group, so far the total stands at £1369.00 which I am delighted with”.
