Plans have come forward to demolish a former Stone swimming pool building to make way for new facilities for a town football club.
Alleyne’s Academy has submitted proposals to redevelop the old pool site at Alleyne’s Sports Centre to provide a clubhouse for Stone Old Alleynians.
Stone Leisure Centre at Westbridge Park now provides swimming space for residents, but the former pool building at Alleyne’s Sports Centre on the other side of the town remains in place. At the start of this year Stafford Borough Council agreed to allocate £430,000 towards the redevelopment of the site.
The planning application submitted to Stafford Borough Council proposes demolishing the unused swimming pool building and changing rooms to create a new sports social area for Stone Old Alleynians. A design and access statement said the new facility would provide a modern clubhouse with social and refreshment areas, supporting club activities and community engagement.
It added:
“The site currently comprises an unused swimming pool building and associated changing rooms, which are in a state of disuse and are a significant hazard. The school and football club both have a clear vision for the future of the site, its improvement, and its future sustainability.
“The surrounding area is predominantly sports and recreation-focused, with extensive playing fields, training facilities and associated infrastructure. These facilities are used by the football club, with over 70 teams, and other sports groups too.
The football club, formed in 1962, are FA Accredited, have the highest possible level of accreditation from The FA and have to uphold the highest standards possible, to maintain the award. Their purpose is to serve the local community, providing opportunities for all abilities and age groups, from u5 to over 70s, as well as disability and SEND provision.“Despite all this, and as it stands, the club has no facility able to accommodate spectators, parents, players or officials, hence their vision to develop this long-time, redundant part of the site. The proposed development at Alleyne’s Sports Centre involves the demolition of the existing, disused swimming pool building and renovation of the associated changing facilities.
“The layout is open plan, enabling the space to be multi use for club meetings, events and other club operations. The building has 10 toilets split between men/ women and an accessible WC, also a small kitchenette with a serving hatch for sporting events.
“Externally the proposed project includes a 130 sq m patio area at the front, offering a functional outdoor space, while the 600 sq m area of the demolished building will be levelled and reseeded with grass, restoring green space to the site. The proposal has been developed with careful consideration to accessibility, sustainability, and community needs, ensuring the facility is inclusive, energy efficient, and adaptable for various uses.”
