A new gymnastics centre could be built on vacant land at a Stone industrial estate to help a town club welcome new members and enable advanced gymnasts to develop their skills.

Back 2 Back Gymnastics has outgrown its existing base on Walton Industrial Estate and now hopes to construct a bespoke facility nearby.

Vacant land previously owned by Severn Trent Investments Ltd has been acquired by Back 2 Back Investments Ltd, and now a planning application has been submitted to Stafford Borough Council seeking permission to construct a new centre on the land off Beacon Road.

A design and access statement submitted as part of the application said:

“Back 2 Back have become an established club providing fitness to adults and children alike. This is something that is not provided anywhere locally, at present, and due to being established will not create competition for any other sporting venue or facility in the local area.

“Back 2 Back have outgrown their current building in terms of gymnast numbers, ability to provide next level training and wish to expand the business, which has a large waiting list which continues to grow. The need for a larger premises has been expedited by the popularity of the sport and the progress of athletes currently at the gym requiring bigger equipment to enable them to train at a more advanced level than is on offer at Back 2 Back’s current premises.

“Having searched the local area for 18 months for a suitable facility of size and location, which did not need considerable investment or complete demolition to provide a suitable sized facility to accommodate the expansion, the opportunity to purchase the proposed site presented itself and Back 2 Back felt that it was perfectly suitable for their new facility, which will provide the suitable size, and allow them to design a bespoke facility. To maintain the gymnastics club’s presence in the town of Stone is key to the success of the club and important to its current members, who travel from outlying areas such as Stoke, Stafford and further afield, as well as the local community who benefit from a sporting facility which provides both fitness and encourages social skills for the community.”

Parking will be provided for up to 28 vehicles, including coaches, as part of the new development. And if the plans are given the green light, the club’s existing site will revert back to industrial, storage and distribution use.
