Police crackdown on summer drink driving

A campaign to tackle drink and drug drivers across Staffordshire this summer was launched today.

The initiative is part of a national crackdown co-ordinated by the Association of Chief Police Officers and will run until the end of June.

Officers will target irresponsible and dangerous drivers during the month-long campaign, as well as carrying out on-the-spot breath-tests.

The summer campaign follows the winter crackdown last December, which saw 118 people arrested and 1,803 roadside breath tests carried out by Staffordshire officers.

Inspector Ian Hancock said: “Motorists are asked to remain safe on the county’s roads this summer and avoid drink or drug driving.

“Summer evenings and weekends can sometimes lead to people going to the pub or having a drink at barbecues as they make the most of the weather.

“To ensure the county’s roads remain safe for all officers will carry out random roadside checks and stop anyone committing a traffic offence or driving in a manner that suggests they are under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Drivers involved in road traffic collisions are also routinely breath-tested.

“The message is simple – don’t drink and drive and don’t take drugs and drive. You will be caught.”
