For as long as I can remember youngsters have run across the roofs of businesses in the High Street risking life and limb of not only themselves but also various police officers in hot pursuit ( in the days when we had enough police ). They have caused damage to masonry and property and even held parties on the tops of the buildings leaving copious amounts of their litter behind. On spotting the police the 3 lads ran off , Is this considered suspicious behaviour or was the fact they were on the roof suspicious behaviour? In the early hours of Saturday morning persons climbed onto the St Michael’s Church Hall roof and placed traffic cones on the finials over the cupola damaging the decorative piece on the roof over the entrance hall. In the process of doing this they broke a number of roof tiles, dislodged ridge tiles on the main roof and also completely removed the end ridge tile above the pavement, there is also damage to one of the finials. I imagine the culprits thought it was a really good prank and didn’t even consider the financial implications . The Church hall is struggling for funds to keep it going and provides a vital service to the community. This isn’t the first time the hall has been hit by vandalism and only last week the entrance pillars to the Church and steps were daubed with graffiti . I can’t help wonder how much this excersise cost although it states the helicopter was already in the area. Surely money would be better spent towards more police on the beat then maybe, just maybe they would be able to keep an eye on the church yard now and again ?
