Police hunt social club arsonists

A storage container behind Bibbys Social Club in Walton was set on fire deliberately on Saturday night.

Two crews from Stone and one crew from Stafford were called to the social club on Tillings Drive at 9pm on Saturday 9th June. They found a storage container at the rear of the building well alight and tackled it using two main jets.

Group manager Phil McFarlane said: “Evidence indicates that this fire was started deliberately and we will support criminal proceedings if the perpetrator is found. This kind of activity is inappropriate and may have serious consequences as in this case three fire engines and 16 personnel were tied up and unable to respond to any further emergency calls.

“The fire was also in danger of spreading to other nearby units which posed significant danger to firefighters as we didn’t know what, if anything, was inside the units.

“We have informed Staffordshire Police about the fire and remind people that starting a fire of any size deliberately can result in a prison sentence.”

Anyone with any information about the fire should call Staffordshire Police on 101 quoting incident number 717 of June 9. Alternatively, you can contact Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.
