Police reveal cause of resident evacuation and road closures in Stone

Residents of Parkhouse Drive, Stone, faced an unexpected evacuation on Tuesday evening following the discovery of a suspected unexploded World War One shell on a residential driveway.

Staffordshire Police were alerted to the scene by Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) at approximately 5:20 p.m.

Upon arrival, officers found the suspected explosive item positioned on the driveway in front of a garage.

To ensure public safety, a number of nearby residents were evacuated from their homes, and Lichfield Road in Stone was closed while experts from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit attended the scene.

The object was carefully x-rayed by the EOD team and determined to be empty. It was subsequently taken away for safe disposal.

Shortly before 10:00 pm, residents were allowed to return to their properties, and Lichfield Road was re-opened.

No injuries were reported during the incident, and the response was praised for ensuring public safety, which remained the priority throughout.
