Police warn Stone residents to stay vigilant of door-to-door sellers

Residents of Stone are being urged to remain cautious following an increase in reports of door-to-door sellers operating in the area. Known informally as ‘Nottingham Knockers,’ these individuals often claim to be ex-offenders selling household goods as part of a rehabilitation scheme. However, Staffordshire Police have confirmed that no such scheme exists.

Rise in reports and police response

PCSO Neil Moffatt from the local policing team has issued a Staffordshire Smart Alert in response to multiple reports of a doorstep seller behaving aggressively when leaving homes. He advised residents to be vigilant and not to feel pressured into buying items.

PCSO Moffatt stated:

“We have received an increase in a number of reports in the local area of an individual reporting to be an ex-offender who is selling items door to door. On occasions, he has been abusive when leaving.

Any official salesperson should be able to provide you with ID or credentials that you can check. Please be vigilant, we are aware and are increasing patrols in the local area.”

Police are now increasing patrols and monitoring the situation closely. Residents who encounter such individuals are encouraged to report any suspicious activity to the authorities.

What to do if you are approached

If someone knocks on your door selling goods:

  • Ask for ID – A legitimate salesperson should be able to provide official credentials.
  • Do not feel pressured – If you feel uncomfortable, politely decline and close the door.
  • Report concerns – Any suspicious activity should be reported to Staffordshire Police via 101 or online at the Staffordshire Police website.
  • In an emergency, always dial 999.

Why residents should be cautious

Nottingham Knockers are often linked to overpriced, poor-quality goods and high-pressure sales tactics. In some cases, individuals may be scouting properties for potential burglaries. Trading Standards and police forces across the UK regularly issue warnings about these sellers, advising residents not to engage with them.

Stay safe and report concerns

Stone residents are encouraged to spread awareness and look out for vulnerable neighbours who may be more susceptible to doorstep scams. By staying alert and reporting incidents, the community can help prevent further issues.

If you have experienced aggressive or suspicious behaviour from a doorstep seller, contact Staffordshire Police on 101 or report online. For immediate threats or emergencies, always call 999.
