Stone Dominoes 2 (Broadhurst 45, Lindop 65) Wolves Sporting Community U21 1 (Potts 18)
President’s Trophy First Round, Saturday 26th September
Stone Dominoes recorded a hard fought 2-1 win to move into the second round of the President’s Trophy, courtesy of goals from Tom Broadhurst and Shane Lindop. Conner Potts had put Wolverhampton ahead before Broadhurst levelled things just before half time. Lindop’s second-half strike secured the victory and Dominoes’ progress in the competition.
Dominoes began the game with intent and might have been ahead within 60 seconds as Ash Cooper’s effort was blocked just inside the visitors’ penalty area. It was the away side who took the lead though, when a long ball forward released Conner Potts on goal after 18 minutes, the forward sliding the ball underneath Dan Marsh to open the scoring.
As the hosts looked liked going in at half time behind, Ash Thompson picked the ball up wide on the left in the 45th minute, and a superb delivery found Broadhurst at the back post, his header finding the top corner of the net for the equaliser.
A defensive error at the start of the second period saw Wolverhampton nearly regain the lead, as a pass from goalkeeper Marsh was intercepted, however the visiting forward could only strike the post with his effort.
With the scoreline level and the game evenly poised, things were starting to get a little heated on the pitch; Dominoes’ Lee Foyle was shoved to the ground by Richard Blackwell, who was fortunate to escape with just a yellow card.
The post was struck again on the hour mark, this time by Joss Myatt, who diverted the ball goalwards from an Ash Thompson delivery. Five minutes later and Dominoes were in front for the first time in the game. Tom Broadhurst’s pinpoint ball over the away defence saw Shane Lindop get free, and although the visiting defenders recovered quickly, he kept his nerve to fire the ball into the bottom corner.
Some late pressure from Wolverhampton in the final few minutes tested the nerves of the Stone players, but they held on, with Lindop’s goal proving to be the decisive one.
“I thought we were in control for large periods of the game,” joint manager Dom Ryder concluded. “We set up to be hard to beat but to create goalscoring opportunities, which ultimately proved to be the case.”
An away trip to Milton United awaits in the next round for Dominoes, while they face Wolverhampton again at Wellbeing Park in Yarnfield this Saturday (3rd October) in the Staffordshire FA Challenge Cup.
