A 12-year-old Proclaimers fan from Stone has been inspired by his grandfather’s diagnosis with prostate cancer – and the lyrics of his favourite band’s most famous song – to walk 500 miles for Cancer Research UK.
Tom Walker, a Year 7 pupil at Christ Church Academy, has taken his inspiration from the famous Proclaimers hit ‘I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)’ – and the Scottish duo have even sent him a note of support.
He’s walking the distance to raise money for the charity to help them help people like his grandfather, who was recently diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer and is currently on a clinical trial part-funded by Cancer Research UK.
Tom said: “I wanted to give something back. My Papa is Scottish and I’m a big Proclaimers fan, so walking 500 miles for the charity and my Papa seemed like a really good idea.”
Tom started his challenge back in February and has included walking to top of Snowdon in his 400+ miles walked to date. So far he has raised over £1,000 through his Just Giving site, as well as cash donations taken to the Cancer Research shop in Stone High Street.
With the note of support he received from The Proclaimers he’s sure to reach his 500-mile target in the next few weeks. He added: “I’d like to thank everyone who has supported me over the last few months.”
