Record Numbers Get Set for Half Marathon

A record 4,000 runners hit the streets of Stafford for the annual half marathon, and hundreds of people are expected to line the route.

The Borough Council-run event taking place this Sunday (19 March) is the biggest yet having increased in popularity over the years. This year and all places sold out in weeks, despite organisers increasing capacity by an extra 500 spaces. Crowds, including local community groups and charities are expected to line the 13.1 mile route to cheer on the runners.

Councillor Mike Smith, Cabinet Member for Leisure, said: “The Stafford Half has gone from strength to strength and this year’s event is bigger than ever. It attracts runners from across the country and each year crowds turn out to support those taking part.”

Each participant will receive a medal along with a running t-shirt, with the race starting at 10am from Stafford Street in the town centre.

Also taking place in the town centre after the half marathon gets under way, at 10.10am, is the Fun Run, which attracts hundreds of families and local organisations. The route, approximately a mile, consists of two laps around the town centre.
