A 14-year-old Stone Hammers footballer turned out for the region after impressing in a Midlands schools tournament in Nottingham.
Midfielder Matt Jones caught the eye of selectors while playing for Stafford Grammar School at the Independent Schools’ Association (ISA) under-16 championships and earned a call-up to the Midlands squad alongside two of his SGS team mates.
The ISA under-16 outfit got its campaign on track with a crushing 6-0 victory over Wolverhampton Grammar under-18s. Matt is expected to line-up again in a forthcoming fixture against Repton School.

Meanwhile three local players helped Stafford Grammar’s under-14 team to glory as they lifted a regional title in Leicestershire for a second successive season.
Stone’s Tom Brownsill, Hilderstone player Emil Agell-Argiles and Eccleshall teenager Ben Holl all played a part as SGS lifted the ISA Midlands trophy, despite being pushed all the way by tournament hosts, Dixie Grammar.
Having been held to 1-1 draws in their opening ties against Tettenhall College and Birmingham-based Highclare, the grammar boys chalked up 4-1 and 3-0 wins against Staffordshire’s Maple Hayes and Bowbrook House from Worcestershire respectively. They went on to beat Staffs neighbours Chase Grammar 2-1 in the round-robin competition.
With Dixie Grammar matching their efforts, a vital 2-0 victory over the hosts steered SGS to a successful defence of their crown.
