With the theatre season kicking off it was time to march on down to The Regent Theatre to see our first show of 2019, Kinky Boots!
Like last years Full Monty, Kinky Boots is another stage show adapted from a classic British film. The show combines brilliant writing, choreography and songs to create a dynamic musical performance that will whisk the audience along a journey of discovery and acceptance.
Kinky Boots is based on real-life events around a Northampton shoe factory. We follow the story of Charlie Price (Joel Harper-Jackson), who is dropped in at the deep end when his father passes away, and Charlie has to rescue the family business. After a chance meeting with London drag queen Lola (Kayi Ushe), Charlie shakes things up at the factory in a bid to save his late fathers business.
We are transported between Northampton and London as Charlie, and his team prepare a catwalk show for a fashion event in Milan.
Kinky Boots is a very well executed piece of musical theatre, blending the storylines with toe-tapping tunes and wonderfully executed choreography. At the core of the story is the need for acceptance. Not just acceptance of the people around you, but just as important is acceptance of yourself. Charlie and Lola discover they have more in common than they initially realise and they both feel like they had disappointed their fathers and carried the guilt of it throughout their lives.
Kinky Boots is a five-star performance with the entire cast being absolutely brilliant. You can’t fail to see the stage presence, and ultimate sparkle of Lola, Kayi Ushe does a fabulous job of making Lola’s personality dazzle. Through Joel’s performance as Charlie, we witness the burden and turmoil of a boss whose employees are looking to for security.
We can’t recommend Kinky Boots enough! We loved everything about the show, from the cast performances, the choreography, costumes and music, the whole show kept us entertained from start to finish!
