Review – Rock of Ages – Regent Theatre, Hanley

Rock of Ages, the show that had the entire audience in stitches, tears, and truly rooting for the characters.

The main story follows the characters of Sherrie (Jodie Steele) and Drew (Luke Walsh), two young people living on the mile and a half stretch of Sunset Boulevard known as ‘Sunset Strip’ as they follow their dreams and fall in love, just like everybody else who lives there. But, of course, it’s the 80s! The prime time of rock n roll.

Right from the opening of this show, it was obvious that we were going to have an amazing time. Before any characters had even opened their mouths to speak, we were dancing in our seats and most people were doubled over with laughter. This was thanks to Lonny (Lucas Rush) whose character you simply couldn’t help but love. The comedic timing and the stage presence of both the actor and the character were like nothing else we have ever seen. Whenever Lonny was onstage, we knew we were about to be laughing and cheering once again.

The vocals in this show were powerful enough to blow the roof off of the theatre. There was not a single voice that left the audience disappointed. Though he’s best known for his footwork on Strictly Come Dancing, Kevin Clifton as Stace Jaxx’s rendition of “I Want To Know What Love Is” shows the voice of a true rockstar. And to no surprise, Luke Walsh as Drew and Jodie Steele as Sherrie’s rendition of “High Enough” was a highlight of the show, showing us the emotional side to the characters rather than just their fun sides.

The ensemble is packed with actors who don’t disappoint either, and they tie the performance together perfectly with their effortless talents. And a special mention must be given to the incredible Zoe Birkett, playing the character of Justice, whose voice alone is enough of a reason to go and see this show before it leaves.
