REVIEW: Sweeney Todd, 14th April

Stone Revellers did it again last night!

Just when you think they’ve done it all, they put on a show that takes your breath away.

‘Sweeney Todd the Demon Barber of Fleet Street’ is no easy option for any production company. I last saw it at the New Vic a couple of years ago and wondered how it would translate to an amateur company performing in a small venue like St Michael’s Hall. Well, it did – in full measure!

A cast of twenty supported by an orchestra of ten (plus a set that was the other star of the show!) kept the packed audience on the edge of their seats. The gruesome plot was vividly revealed by a talented company including Tracey Brough who was superb as Mrs Lovatt and Mark Norris who played a very scary Sweeney Todd. Ably supported by Leah Stubbs as the beautiful blonde Joanna and David Wild and Bill Coles playing the ‘bad men’ Judge Turpin and Beadle Bamford respectively, the whole cast put on an extremely polished and enjoyable performance.

Yet again, I never cease to be amazed at the amount of talent we have in this wonderful town of ours – and what a tragedy we don’t have a hall in Stone large enough to allow productions like this to be enjoyed by hundreds rather than the few dozen who have been lucky enough to secure their tickets early.

Well done to all concerned.
