Royal Exchange marks Titanic centenary

Iceberg ahead! Landlady Michelle Hughes and two of her bar staff

Staff and customers marked the centenary of the sinking of the Titanic at the weekend with a music festival – aptly titled ‘And The Bands Played On’ – and lots more.

Sunday saw all staff donning period costumes to  mark the occasion, with landlady Michelle Hughes dressing as an iceberg and two of her staff being the ship!

The pub in Radford Street – which was recently named the pub of the winter season by young members of Camra’s Heart of Staffordshire branch – was decked out in boating items loaned by Stone Boatbuilding Company.

Bands played live from Thursday to Sunday, including Stone’s The Blueshounds, and the pub joined the minute’s silence on Saturday night as a mark of respect to those who died in the disaster.

Landlady Michelle said: “We had a fabulous weekend. The music was fantastic and everyone really got involved, not to mention my staff here, who are just brilliant.

“We also held a raffle to raise money for the Douglas Macmillan Hospice, with the top prize a Titanic cake made by one of my friends.”

Michelle said that work has already started on the pub’s next big event in the summer – although she remains tight-lipped about what’s going on!
