The Royal Logistics Corps carried out a controlled explosion in Stone on Saturday (23rd April).

The explosion was carried out in the field behind Redwood Avenue, off the A34, at about 5pm on Saturday evening.

Andy Stone was walking his dogs on the field on Saturday morning when he found a number of corroded metal cylinders, all connected by wires. Wife Carole said: “They were buried in the river bank, probably uncovered during recent erosion of the bank due to the heavy rain. He notified the police as he was unsure of what it was.”

Police officers told residents that what was found was a “large pyrotechnic”.

Catherine McNulty said: “Our garden backs on to the field and the police advised us to stay indoors and cleared the field before the explosion. Police were in the field all day stopping people walking by the river, then the bomb disposal team arrived and moved it into the middle of the field to do the explosion. The police came to the bottom of the garden to tell us.”

Those who weren’t aware what was going on certainly were when the explosion was carried out. Jane Thomason said: “The bang was loud enough for people to come out of their houses to check what it was.”
