Safety appeal as new firefighter strike is called

Staffordshire’s Chief Fire Officer has urged people to take extra care following the announcement of a 24-hour strike by the Fire Brigades Union (FBU).

The industrial action will take place from 7am on Wednesday 25th February to 7am on Thursday 26th.

Chief Fire Officer Peter Dartford, also President of the Chief Fire Officers Association, said: “We would once again urge residents to be particularly cautious while at home and on the roads during next week’s strike. As always, contingency plans will be put in place and we will answer all 999 calls. We will attend life threatening incidents but it will not be business as usual for us.

“The number of incidents has decreased during all of the previous periods of industrial action which is in no small way due to the vigilance of our communities. Residents can continue to assist us by taking some simple steps such as testing your smoke alarms, running through your escape plan and making sure you get into the routine of turning electrical items off and shutting doors before going to bed.”

This will be the 14th round of strike action to be held since the dispute between the FBU and the Government began in September 2013 over pensions.
