Saturday 11th February – morning A34 road closure for abnormal load movement

Abnormal LoadFor those planning to travel between Stone and Stafford on the 11th of February – the A34 will be closed both ways to all traffic for a duration of 90 minutes, between 7-11am as an abnormal load comes through the roadworks between the Redhill roundabout to Yarlet Lane.

It is advised that those travelling during this time factor in additional time to account for the diversion route. The cause for this road closure is due to another abnormal load movement, which is being transported from GE Stafford to Cheshire.

For the safety of all road users, no vehicles will be permitted on the A34 during the 90-minute closure period. The load will be escorted by the police, and the road will be re-opened as soon as it is deemed safe.

As well as the full road closure, there will be temporary holds on traffic as the wide load passes northbound along its route as it often has to navigate roads and roundabouts on the wrong side.

Electronic variable message signs will be in place to inform motorists of the closures and suggest alternative routes. These signs will be updated on the morning of the closure with more accurate closure times as the load progresses.

David Williams, the cabinet member for highways and transport at Staffordshire County Council, had this to say regarding the matter:

“With these abnormal load movements along the A34, there is limited flexibility. While the load will be transported relatively quickly, we do require the 90-minute slot as the exact time of transportation is still uncertain.

The signs will be updated with more precise times on the morning of the closure. We would like to thank the public for their patience and understanding during this period.”

  • Chris think about heath and safety will not allow them to travel at night with something so big and it costs much more money

The notice states a 90 minute slot yet the road closure seems to be from 7am – 11am!

  • Chris round

Why can’t it be done at night, I will miss my train now due to uncertain timings?
