Share your Jubilee events!

Stafford Borough Council has urged people in Stone to let the whole borough know what they are doing for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and London Olympics.

The council is putting together a dedicated calendar to list events organised by residents, community groups and charities throughout a year marking the two major showpieces. The authority has already waived £100 road closure charges to encourage more residents to organise their own events.

Now the council is asking people to get in touch to give details of what’s going on throughout 2012. All the events will eventually be recorded on to a calendar on the council’s dedicated webpages www.staffordbc.gov.uk/2012.

Adam Hill, head of leisure and culture, who is leading the borough’s 2012 campaign, said: “We want people to take the opportunity of making this jubilee an incredible and memorable celebration of community spirit.

“We want residents to come together with their neighbours and organise street parties, house parties, events at village halls or local greens – it could be a dance, musical evening, tea party – but whatever it is, it will be about bringing communities back together by celebrating the Diamond Jubilee and Olympics.”

Stafford and the nearby villages of Gnosall and Haughton have been listed as places where the Olympic flame will be travelling through this May on its journey around the UK.

But Mr Hill says it is not just about all about those three places: “This is about the whole community celebrating 2012 and providing a legacy for future years.”

If you are organising an event email 2012@staffordbc.gov.uk. To close a road just write to legalservices@staffordbc.gov.uk or the Civic Centre, Riverside, Stafford confirming the emergency services and county council’s Highways don’t object and a notice will be issued for free. You must get in touch with the council a minimum of four weeks before the date of the event.

A £125,000 jubilee fund to help groups with one-off grants to provide a legacy for their club or organisation has been given the go ahead by the council’s cabinet.

Please also let A Little Bit of Stone know if you’re planning a street party or anything else to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee or the Olympics! Send an email to 2012@alittlebitofstone.com Thanks!
