Smoke and Rye in Stone announces closure

Smoke and Rye has announced it has closed its restaurant in Stone.

The Stafford Street venue shared the news in a message on social media thanking customers, staff, suppliers and regulars for their support, and said anyone with an upcoming booking, a voucher or any questions should email bookings@smokeandrye.net.

In its closing message, the team described the restaurant as more than just a place to eat, saying it had been a home for big flavours, bourbon, late nights and the community that gathered around it.

That sense of identity was a big part of how the restaurant presented itself publicly. Its website describes Smoke and Rye as bringing the tastes and hospitality of the USA to Stone, with a strong focus on smoked food, cocktails and bourbon. The business also says its bar stocked more than 50 imported American whiskies and bourbons.

The closure marks the end of a restaurant that had been part of Stone’s food and drink scene for close to ten years.

Whether there is another chapter for the team elsewhere is not yet clear. For now, the message from the business is simply one of thanks, and an acknowledgement that this particular chapter in Stone has come to an end.

We’ve been to this place 3 or 4 times over the years, and it was always fantastic. The beef rib will always be in my memory as the best one I’ve ever had. Now that’s it’s closed, I just wish I’d made more effort to go. I’m in Cannock, so not a million miles away. A great shame. The only other great BBQ place is rub me tender in Lichfield. Under no circumstances anybody mention Hickory’s!!! Absolutely crap. Do not believe the hype.
