A new community initiative takes root in Stone to care for the cherished churchyard and its surroundings.

Bringing the community together for a historic cause

A new group, the St Michael’s Churchyard and Neighbourhood Group, has been formed to help preserve and enhance the historic grounds of St Michael’s Church in Stone. This initiative brings together local volunteers, including members of the church, to ensure the churchyard remains a peaceful and welcoming space for residents and visitors alike.

Currently, Stafford Borough Council manages the grounds, but the addition of the group’s efforts is set to fill gaps created by competing council demands and limited church resources.

Why the group is needed

The churchyard, known for its historic significance and community value, faces challenges from occasional anti-social behaviour and general upkeep needs. While dog walkers and visitors are typically respectful of the space, additional support is crucial to maintain its beauty and functionality.

The small congregation at St Michael’s focuses on the church’s spiritual work, leaving limited capacity for caring for the grounds. With the Council’s resources stretched, this new group aims to bridge the gap.

Goals and activities

The group has outlined a range of possible activities to improve the churchyard, including:

  • Clearing and maintaining paths
  • Organising proper gravestone cleaning
  • Fundraising for restoration projects, such as the St Vincent Mausoleum and chest tombs
  • Developing a tree and landscape plan
  • Creating informational materials about the site’s history for residents, visitors, and local schools

The group is keen to focus efforts gradually, depending on volunteer capacity and partnerships with the church and council.

Get involved

Tim Gillow, the group’s contact, is inviting anyone interested to join the effort. If you’re passionate about protecting this historic site and enhancing its role in the community, reach out at gillowt@gmail.com to learn more about how you can contribute.
