Stage stars to share skills at Summer Holiday Club

Stone’s Rooftop Studios will play host to two masterclasses with professional stage performers this summer, offering newcomers and budding stars some top tips and insights into how to get ahead in the industry.

The masterclasses will form part of the school’s Summer Holiday Club, which runs from Monday 10th – Friday 14th August.  They will be led by two of the studio’s many industry contacts, London-based choreographer Alex Scurr, whose CV includes dance performances for various films and tv productions, and West End star Richard Smikle, who having been born and bred in Stoke-on-Trent, has gone on to star in the hit Michael Jackson musical Thriller.

Alex will be taking the first of the masterclasses on Tuesday 11th August, offering two age-specific choreography sessions – 7-11 year olds from 10.45am – 12.15pm, followed by 12+ year olds from 1pm – 2.30pm.

As well as performing, Alex has taught at various theatre schools, colleges and dance studios in both London and Australia.  His class would be extremely beneficial for anyone wishing to go into further stage and/or dance training and work with someone of his standard.

Thursday 13th August will see local lad Richard showcase his Thriller Live workshop, again in age-specific classes, in the morning and afternoon.  This is a must for dance fans and wannabe stars, as Richard will demonstrate original Jacko choreography, as well as signature moves and dances used in the actual West End show.  Richard has a fantastic pedigree, having left Staffordshire for the bright lights of London aged just 16, and gone on to feature as a member of the original cast of Thriller Live, dancing with the likes of Girls Aloud, The Pussycat Dolls, Duffy, JLS and many more.

Rooftop Studios director, Laura Keeling, says:  “Thanks to our fantastic network of industry contacts, we are extremely excited to be staging workshops hosted by two such talented individuals.  This is a great opportunity for anyone interested in the performing arts as a future career to get involved and see first-hand how professionals such as Alex and Richard operate. We have already had several enquiries about the Holiday Club, and these two masterclasses in particular, so I would advise booking early to avoid disappointment.”

Alongside the masterclasses, the Summer Holiday Club provides a packed schedule of classes and workshops centred on dance, song, drama and music designed to educate – as well as entertain – during the school break.  A full timetable of classes for the Holiday Club is available on Rooftops’ website – www.rooftopstudios.co.uk and parents can ‘pick ‘n’ mix’ sessions, ranging from just one hour to a full day or entire week to accommodate their childcare needs.

Limited places are available on the masterclasses, which can be booked on a stand alone basis, at £15 each.  Classes will run from Rooftop Studios, High Street Arcade, in Stone.
