Stone church joins Pokemon Go craze!

Pokemon Go
Millions of people around the world are playing Pokemon Go

It’s the gaming craze that’s sweeping the world – and a church in Stone is quickly getting in on the Pokemon Go action!

The Pokémon Go app was only officially released in the UK on Thursday (15th July), but on Friday evening (16th July) Christ Church is holding a PokéStop Party, when gamers will gather to hunt for creatures in and around the church and enjoy a barbecue.

If all this is a bit baffling, we’d better explain!

Pokémon Go is an augmented reality mobile game. Players move around the physical world – using their phones’ GPS technology – to capture Pokemon creatures, battle with other players at Pokemon Gyms and pick up game extras at Pokéstops.

Christ Church is a Pokéstop in the game and there are lots more dotted around Stone, including the St John’s Church building, the amphitheatre on Crown Meadow, old Joules’ Brewery buildings and more.

And Christ Church has decided to join in the fun with its Pokémon Party from 7pm.

Most churches around the country have been designated as Pokéstops and they are being urged to make the most of this opportunity to engage with local people in their communities.

Staffordshire Police, meanwhile, has warned gamers to stay safe and take steps to protect their personal data when playing Pokémon Go.

Officers are urging players to remember the real world when catching Pokemon by issuing the following top tips:-

  • Remember, don’t make yourself vulnerable – don’t be tempted to take your phone out in busy or unlit areas where you could be a target for thieves
  • Always concentrate on any dangers around you and be especially careful when crossing the road – look where you are going and what is coming, don’t just focus on your mobile phone
  • Never play the game when driving as this is a criminal offence and you will be prosecuted if caught
  • Ensure that you don’t trespass on private property
