Stone councillor Mike Carey dies aged 65

Stone Town and Stafford Borough councillor Mike Carey has died aged 65.

Cllr Carey was this year’s Deputy Mayor for Stone, his fourth time in the role.

“Always the bridesmaid, never the bride!” he’d joked to A Little Bit of Stone after the mayor-making meeting back in May.

He was co-opted on to Stone Town Council in 1974 and elected to the borough council in 1979, remaining on both until 1995, and was re-elected on to both in 2003. In 2006/7 he served as Deputy Mayor of Stafford Borough

At May’s borough council elections,  Conservative Cllr Carey polled the most votes out of any Stone candidate.

Councillor Mike Heenan, Leader of Stafford Borough Council, said: “He was a tremendous fighter for his own ward and would often think of things that no-one else had thought about. He will be very sadly missed.”

Back in April, Cllr Carey – along with all the other borough council candidates – wrote an appeal for votes on A Little Bit of Stone.

Here’s part of what he wrote: “I’m married with two children, four grandchildren and a boxer dog called Piglet. I feel very fortunate that I’ve been able to serve Walton ward for many years as one of the councillors and of course I have gained a lot of experience which has enabled me to use it to the benefit of the residents of Walton and Stone, by talking and trying to influence people that make the decisions which enables problems to be solved.

“I believe that a Councillor’s job is to listen to concerns / problems – and solve them.”
