Stone depot at the heart of winter gritting operation

Workers at the county council’s highways depot in Stone are busy preparing for the winter road gritting operation.

More than 1,200 grit bins are currently being filled across the county as the winter chill begins. And the county says it has doubled its salt stocks to 30,000 tonnes for this winter following last year’s extreme weather conditions.

The Stone depot in Newcastle Road is at the heart of the county’s winter gritting plan, with most of the county’s gritters based there, as well as thousands of tonnes of salt!

Staffordshire County Councillor Mike Maryon, Cabinet member for Highways, said: “We are fine tuning our operations to deliver even more impact for every kilo of salt. But with more than 3,500 miles of roads and pavements there are places we simply cannot reach.

“By providing salt at a grass roots level, we are giving people the opportunity and ability to make a difference for their community.

“This salt is not there for people’s private driveways. These are public resources.  By pulling together as communities, we can all play our in keeping everyone safe, particularly older and vulnerable people.”
