Stone Dominoes

Stone Dominoes moved up to third in the table on Saturday as an Ash Cooper hat-trick helped them to a convincing victory at Wellbeing Park.

Joss Myatt had put Dominoes ahead just before the half hour mark, before Marcus Thorp’s first goal for the club a couple of minutes later had doubled the lead. Cheadle had replied through Matthew Woodward but a quick-fire Ash Cooper double had given the hosts a 4-1 half time lead. Second half goals from Tom Broadhurst (2), Ben Roberts, Lee Foyle and another for Cooper completed the goal spree.

Cheadle started the game brightly having a goal ruled out for offside in the first three minutes, before Ben Wilcox shot straight at Craig Bould for the away side when through on goal a few minutes later.

The home side seemed to settle into the game from that point, with Ash Thompson displaying quick feet on the edge of the area before forcing a good save from the visiting goalkeeper Matthew Anthony. Dominoes broke the deadlock on 28 minutes when Marcus Thorp was released down the left side, his low, first time cross finding Joss Myatt, who spun on the ball brilliantly to fire past Anthony.

Three minutes later and Thorp again found himself with the ball on the left, this time cutting inside to skip past two Cheadle players, before finding the top corner with a fantastic right foot strike. The visitors were back in the game almost immediately as Matthew Woodward intercepted a Ben Roberts pass on the right, and with Craig Bould perhaps expecting a cross, Woodward’s shot squeezed inside the goalkeeper’s near post to halve the deficit.

It took just five minutes for Dominoes to restore their two goal cushion however, Tom Broadhurst’s powerful header in the middle of the pitch releasing Ash Cooper who finished well to make it 3-1. Cooper doubled his tally two minutes later when a cross into the Cheadle box was only half cleared, the Stone forward quickest to react to smash the ball into the net to give his side a 4-1 lead at the interval.

As the second half began, the hosts were intent on pushing for more it seemed, and further increased their lead a minute in when Broadhurst pounced on a half cleared cross to place the ball right footed into the top corner.

It was 6-1 on 55 minutes with a superb team goal finished by Ben Roberts for his third of the season. With Dominoes moving the ball around comfortably, the centre back was able to bring the ball out, and some quick interplay between Broadhurst, Cooper and Lee Foyle resulted in the ball being returned to Roberts (who had carried on his run) to bring the ball down inside the box and prod past the onrushing goalkeeper.

Just after the hour mark, Jack Steele went down under a challenge inside the Cheadle penalty area, and Cooper made no mistake from the spot to complete his hat-trick before being replaced by Lewis Adams. Lee Foyle opened his account for Dominoes when he deservedly got on the scoresheet on 69 minutes as he reacted quickly to a loose ball inside the box to lash home a half volley to make it 8-1.

It was nearly nine a minute later, when a lovely through ball from Lewis Adams was met by a great first touch from Ash Thompson to give him a clear route to goal, his effort was saved well though by Anthony with Broadhurst unable to convert the rebound.

It was Broadhurst who completed the scoring three minutes from time, after another good ball from Lewis Adams released him behind the Cheadle backline, the Stone midfielder taking his time before sliding the ball low past the goalkeeper.

Dominoes are in cup action on Saturday as they make the trip to Burntwood Town of the Midland Football League for a Staffs FA Challenge Cup tie.
