Stone Dominoes LFC were knocked out of the Staffordshire Women’s County Cup as they lost 4-2 at home to Florence Ladies.
Stone went into the game as underdogs facing a team in the division above, however all the possession was in Dominoes favour in the first 20minutes. Chance after chance came but no goals. Florence crept back into the game and with only two shots on goal, two goals were scored. Stone grabbed a lifeline just before the break, however, when Mollie Prime broke free after a Florence corner, running through the Florence defence and netting to make it 2-1 on the stroke of half-time.
The second half saw both teams create chances and an equaliser for Stone looked like it had come in the form of an own goal headed in from a corner – however it was disallowed as the ref judged the keeper had been fouled. Florence retaliated with a goal bouncing off their striker into the Dominoes net to make it 3-1.
Stone dragged themselves back into the match, though, when Holly Fowell rifled a free kick into the net.
The last 15 minutes were scrappy, with Florence playing for time, but they scored for a foutth time, making the final score 4-2 and taking them into the next round of the County Cup.
Shropshire County Girls League: Stone Dominoes U16 Girls 5 – Whitchurch 1
Dominoes looked the better side from the off, having much of the possession. Alex Walker scored first for Stone, but Whitchurch responded with an equaliser. After the break Dominoes began to dominate the play. Chloe Luty scored a cracking goal making it 2-1. Alex Walker got another two goals, as well as Emily Snape. The central midfielders Josie Woodward and Emily Snape put in 100% effort in keeping possession and creating chances for the strikers.
The Stone defence was solid, Leia Whitfield and Sofia Wojiuk in the centre of defence rarely let much past them. Substitutes were also making a difference when they came on the pitch. It was another great team display from the girls who are really working well together. Player of the match was Alex Walker for a brilliant performance.
