Bradwell LFC 0 – Stone Dominoes LFC 1: Stone made it through to the semi-finals of the Staffordshire County Women’s League Cup with a narrow victory at Bradwell.

Stone were expecting an easy game after knocking 10 goals past Bradwell in their last two encounters, but on Sunday they were a much stronger side, battling equally as hard on a very muddy playing surface. Both teams came close to taking the lead in the first half but it was central defender Hayley Mason who bundled the ball into the back of the net after a corner to put Stone in front.

After the break Stone used the wings more – short passing was virtually impossible in the centre of the pitch as the ball stuck in the mud. Laura Barker came close to netting after a shot she fired hit the post. Laura Baskerville, who moved into a striker role in the last 10 minutes, made an impact and considering the state of the pitch, she did well to dribble the ball through the Bradwell defence in the dying minutes of the game, keeping possession and frustrating the Bradwell team. A well-fought win for Stone who now take on Shrewsbury Town in the cup semi-final, with Burton Albion Reserves taking on Brereton Town Ladies in the other semi.

They put in an absolutely brilliant performance in the blazing weather conditions on Saturday. The girls played well with accurate passes in all areas of the pitch and closing down when not in possesion quickly. Having no goalkeeper meant that two girls, striker Alex Walker and defender Leia Whitfield, offered to play out of position and step in, both making some excellent saves. Newport scored three brilliant goals, with Holly McCulloch scoring for the Dominoes. Player of the match was Alex Walker[/box]
