The chairman of Stone Festival today added his voice to concerns at the prospect of development on Westbridge Park.
A Little Bit of Stone reported yesterday on the chairman of Stone Food and Drink Festival’s opposition to Westbridge Park being identified as a site for ‘mixed use development’ in the Stafford Borough Local Plan. You can read that story HERE – and the many comments that you’ve left so far.
Now John Sayer, the chairman of Stone Festival, has voiced his concerns and called on town and borough councillors to get any reference to development at Westbridge Park removed from the Local Plan.
John said: “The Local Plan recognises the importance of Stone Festival to the town of Stone (Paragraph 2.24) and also recognises Westbridge Park as a valuable recreational space (Paragraph 8.6). I wonder just how those two statements are consistent with the overall policy objective of permitting mixed-use development.
“Stone Festival is a valuable community event which brings the whole town together for a week in June. The large open spaces of Westbridge Park are vital to the success of the event. I call on the town’s borough and town councillors to fight any plans to permit any development on Westbridge Park.”
Stone Festival is organised by volunteer members of the local ATC, Inner Wheel, Lions, Round Table and Rotary Clubs, with support from many other community-minded groups and individuals. All money raised, after covering the costs of putting on Stone Festival, is distributed to local good causes – this year the Festival distributed £4,000.
