Stone firefighter up for hero award

A Stone firefighter has been nominated for the Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service heroes for 2011 awards.

Mike Burnside, who provides part-time cover at Stone fire station, has been shortlisted for the Leadership Message Award for his role in promoting fire safety, including his part in quadrupling the number of home fire checks carried out in the town.

He has been nominated for his commitment to community fire service and leadership amongst colleagues. Since Mike took up his role at Stone station, Home Fire Risk Check take-up has quadrupled and in February last year he was promoted to crew manager at Stone fire station.

Peter Dartford, Chief Fire Officer/Chief Executive of Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: “Vital to the success of Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service are the people that form the organisation, so it is important that we recognise them, celebrate the hard work they do and the contribution they make to improving the lives and well-being of those we serve.

“Over 100 nominations were received internally and almost 30 from members of the public. A team of staff from across the organisation have had the difficult and unenviable task of shortlisting the finalists in each category.”

This year’s MORE Staff Awards take place on Thursday 1st March at the County Showground in Stafford and will be hosted by BBC Radio WM presenter Joanne Malin.
