LET’S COOK At Home’s hugely successful first event from the LET’S COOK! Ukraine team took off this week with Stone’s very own Ukrainian cook, Oksana Harris, at the helm and Stafford entrepreneur Ingrid Wagner as compere.
Launched with a special offer at the recent Stone Food & Drink Festival, where Oksana cooked up a storm in the Demonstration Kitchen, Wendy Reynolds was the winner for herself and 4 foodie friends and she lost no time in setting up a date for the experience at her home in Stone.
Stuffed mushrooms, fish stew and courgette pancakes, all specialities from Ukraine, were on the cards and under the knife on Tuesday evening with lots of laughter and learning together about Ukrainian food and culture and even a little of the language.
Liubov Danko, newly arrived in the UK from Kiev and hosted by a Stafford family, serenaded the group with songs from her homeland inbetween courses & peeling vegetables. Safe to say that it wasn’t the chopping of onions which brought tears to the eyes of all the listeners.
A confirmed foodie herself, Wendy loves to travel and taste food from different cultures. She knew that the evening would be an instant hit with her longstanding group of friends whose children have all grown up together, who meet regularly and are always up for new experiences.
“I can’t thank Oksana and the team enough for such a lovely evening,” said Wendy. “It was so amazing listening to traditional songs and eating delicious, flavoursome Ukrainian food. We all agreed that it was great fun and also that we learned so much. We couldn’t stop saying ‘yum’ and ‘so tasty’ when we sat down and ate together.”
“The singing was absolutely beautiful,” added Michaela Williams, “it really moved us all. Learning first hand about people who have to adapt their lives and come to our country to live a different life was very special. The singing was absolutely beautiful – it really moved us all.”
