The community group behind many of Stone’s floral displays is calling for new volunteers to help keep the town a place residents are proud of and that’s welcoming for visitors.

A group with deep roots in the town
Stone in Bloom started back in 1991, as a local effort to brighten the town and make it feel cared for.
More than thirty years later, it’s grown into one of Staffordshire’s best-known volunteer groups, winning numerous gold awards in the Heart of England in Bloom competition. Judges regularly comment not just on the flowers but on the sense of community and care that runs through the town.
How the group keeps going
In its early years, the project was supported by Stafford Borough Council funding – cars for judges, awards ceremonies, even trophies. These days it’s a self-funded effort. Every penny raised by volunteers goes straight into tools, bulbs, compost and all the bits that keep Stone tidy and colourful.
Stone Town Council still funds the town’s hanging baskets, and the Streetscene team often lend a hand, giving up extra hours to support the work.
New faces needed
The group is now keen to find new people to carry the project forward. A recruitment evening will be held at Bod on the High Street at 7pm on Monday 17 November, open to anyone curious about getting involved.
