Stone Independents launch petition for traffic island removal

Earlier this month Stone Independents launched a petition to Staffordshire County Council to remove the so-called “Temporary Splinter Island” at the bottom of Christchurch Way.

The written petition was launched at March’s Farmer’s Market, and there is now also an online petition available for people to sign at – Splinter Island Removal Petition

The temporary island was installed originally during February 2011, in an attempt to improve traffic flow from Christchurch Way into Stafford Road. The alterations cost Staffordshire County Council £15,600, and the junction has been the subject of many a debate, both at the local Town Council meetings and from members of the public.

The current layout sees traffic wanting to head from Christchurch Way into Stafford Street having to all funnel through the inside lane of the ring road. This has created particular problems around the Morrisons supermarket with traffic queues of up to an hour being reported to get off on busy days!

Stone Independent Councillor Rob Kenney told A Little Bit of Stone:

“We know the removal of the splinter island has been a local issue for many years and this formed part of our manifesto at the 2015. Since then, as elected Stone Town Councillors and Stone Independents we have written to Staffs County Council and requested the removal of the splinter island several times but the furthest we have managed to get is additional Traffic surveys of the traffic flow past the splinter island.

We haven’t given up and will continue until the result residents want is achieved. We realise that people power is needed to convince Staffs County Council that this well supported local concern and the easiest way to do this is in the form of a is a petition.”

Will you be glad to see a change back to the old traffic layout on Christchurch Way / Stafford Street?

  • Leave the island were it is. Change the left hand flow so you don’t have to stop. And move the lights by Morrison’s to a 4 way crossing like the one that is on the longton road by the pud. That would make it better for every one.

  • rather not

I think the lights coming out of the high street should only go to green on every third cycle. I have often sat at the crossing lights with no one exiting the high street. This would also help to dissuade morning queue jumpers rat running. Unless the high street lights are on green then there should be a permanent left turn filter from the crossing into Litchfield road. If the island is removed the flood of traffic will make thinks even more difficult for people exiting the new M&S and gym facility. My guess is that eventually there will need to be lights there too.
