A Stone man is taking on a gargantuan task by rowing across the width of Scotland to raise money for his Mum’s cancer ward.
Chris Carpenter, Vice-Captain of Stone Rugby Club, has agreed to take on this huge challenge despite having no previous experience of canoeing.
On the 28th July, he will tackle the infamous ‘Great Glen Canoe Challenge’ which is an epic 60 mile (95km) journey crossing Scotland from Fort William to Inverness in 5 days and conquering the formidable open waters of Loch Lochy and Loch Ness. He will be joined by his close friend Glenn Sargent, who last year canoed from Preston to Stone, as well as Jason Smith and Tony Smith.
Stone Rugby Club have swarmed to support him, his teammate and ex-Royal Marine Andy Davies has put together a strenuous training programme for him. Supporting him with the training is teammate John Bekalo who has kept him on track by visiting local Stone gym Pro Evolution Fitness.
Chris was inspired to take action watching his mum bravely fight back against her breast and liver cancer, and so he is raising funds towards the cancer ward which treated her so well.
Chris explains; “In November 2017 my mum was diagnosed with breast cancer, a few weeks later she told my sisters and me that she had been diagnosed with secondary’s in her liver.
So many people will understand how useless you can feel when a relative is diagnosed, my mum set the tone quickly. “Nothing changes” and “don’t treat me any different” were common phrases in the household. One evening on a walk she described her new challenge as “coming a cropper” she said she would fight her illness with every ounce of strength she has, she will dislike the fact I have just referred to it as an illness in this story!
Anyone questioning her fight would be massively mistaken, she is leading the charge and we are all trying to keep up.
In an effort to give something back I will be fundraising for the cancer unit at Burton on Trent Hospital, hopefully my efforts will mean they can carry on giving my mum and so many others the treatment they need to take their fight to cancer!”
