The Olympic flame won’t be passing through Stone on its 8,000-mile journey around the UK en route to the London 2012 opening ceremony on 27th July.
The full torch relay was announced this morning and sees the torch travelling from Stafford to Shelton in Stoke-on-Trent as part of the Chester-Stoke leg of the relay on 30th May. Unfortunately, the torch will not be coming through Stone, instead taking an alternative route into the Potteries down the M6.
The route of the Olympic torch relay, which can be viewed in full at www.london2012.com/olympictorchrelay, gives street-by-street details and proposed start times for when the Olympic flame will travel through Staffordshire on 30th May and again on 30th June.
People in Stone, however, have been urged to get behind the Olympic torch relay in Staffordshire and to travel the short distance to get involved in the celebrations.
Staffordshire County Councillor Pat Corfield, Cabinet member for culture, communities and customers, said: “We are incredibly excited to welcome the Olympic Flame to Staffordshire and are very privileged to have it pass through the county on two occasions. We want everyone to be involved in this momentous occasion, to share the excitement, and to celebrate our inspirational community torch carriers. Sebastian Coe, chairman of the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games (LOCOG), added: ‘Today we bring the Olympic Torch Relay to life. The Flame symbolises the Olympic spirit and its journey around the UK will bring the excitement of the Games to our streets. Now the people know the route the Olympic Flame will be carried along and the Torchbearers for their community, they can start planning how they might celebrate and make it Staffordshire’s moment to shine.”
The Olympic torch will be making an appearance at a free evening celebration event in Hanley Park on 30th May and will travel to the National Memorial Arboretum on 30th June to coincide with their Armed Forces event.
