Stone mum raises money for groundbreaking operation

A Stone Mum is fundraising for one of her son’s recovery after an operation to help improve his quality of life.

Four-year-old twins Freddie and Charlie Holmes both have Cerebral Palsy which has affected them from birth. Selective dorsal rhizotomy (SDR) helps to reduce rigidity and stiffness in muscles making it easier to move and hopefully walk unaided.

Charlie has quadriplegic Cerebral Palsy which means that all his limbs are affected, and he uses the aid of a wheelchair to get around. Freddie, however, has diplegic Cerebral Palsy which affects his legs. Both boys have taken leaps and bounds in their development and Freddie, and his family have worked hard to try and ensure that he is a prime candidate for the surgery which is not always funded.

The surgery which can cost around £50,000 pounds has strict criteria. Luckily they were approved for the surgery by Alder Hay Hospital in Liverpool earlier this month. Freddie and his parents have had to ensure that he has built up enough strength in his legs and trunk to be able to support his body, as you can imagine this has not been easy and has taken Freddie and his family lots of gruelling physio to be able to do this. They have also have been busy working with physiotherapists to ensure that he has the best outcomes after the surgery. The operation is due to be undertaken in July of next year.

Jo, Freddie and Charlie’s mum are fundraising online as, unfortunately, the physiotherapy and support for the family who also have another child under the age of 5 is not free. To support this fantastic family then go to https://just4children.org/children-helped2018/team-holmes-vs-cerebral-palsy/ to donate.
