Stone residents gave an overwhelming thumbs-up to the Stone Neighbourhood plan as Thursday’s referendum passed with 85.7% of the vote, legally the plan is now active and Stafford Borough need to use it when making planning decisions in the town.
The Stone Neighbourhood plan has been in development, review and scrutiny for the past 5 years and it has now passed its final milestone as it was backed by more than the required 51% of Stone residents.
The plan, a whopping 102-page document, was summarised as part of our election coverage -> https://alittlebitofstone.com/2021-elections/stone-neighbourhood-plan-referendum/
The Stone Neighbourhood Plan shapes the future development of Stone, allowing the local community to take the lead in planning how its own neighbourhood will develop. It gives the opportunity for local people to actively plan where new development should go and designates our green space so they may be safeguarded from future developments
The plan looks to do this by setting out a vision, a number of aims and then policies that would support the delivery of the aims, and therefore the vision.
The Vision for Stone as outlined in the Plan is: ‘… Stone will be a thriving market town alongside the river and canal, with an attractive and accessible historic centre, a high-quality network of green space, a wide range of leisure and recreational activities, a successful tourism sector, high-quality local services and a diversity of local employment opportunities.’
Green spaces are a very hot topic and were front and centre in the recent local elections too. The plan sets out special designation to our green spaces in the town, you can view the list of green spaces that the plan now protects here – > appendix C pages
