Stone Old Alleynians

Stone Old Alleynians play the biggest match in their history on Thursday night at the home of Wolverhampton Wanderers – and manager Matt Smith has urged people in the town to get down to Molineux to cheer the Old Boys on to the JW Hunt Cup trophy.

Manager Matt Smith has worked wonders in his first season in charge of the Old Boys – they’ve been promoted and had decent runs in the FA Vase and Staffordshire Vase. But their final game of the season on Thursday 21st May is a cracker: the JW Hunt Cup Final.

Their route to Molineux has been full of giant-killings as they’ve toppled teams from much higher leagues, and they’re going to have to do it again in the final – opponents Tividale are three leagues above the Old Boys and will pose a stiff challenge.

“We’re big underdogs again,” said Matt. “We want to enjoy the occasion and give a good account of ourselves. But we really want to win it. We can’t wait to play at Molineux, a proper football stadium, and we’re hoping to take a lot of support down there on Thursday night. This season’s been full of big games. I’ve started a few of my team talks with ‘This is the biggest game in the club’s history’. And this one is again.

“Myself and all the players are all from Stone, and I think it’s given us a real spirit and togetherness. I went to school with some of the players and it’s been really important this season to represent the town in a good light. It’s been an incredible season and I hope people can get behind us for the final. Hopefully we can bring the trophy home to Stone.”

Tickets for the big final, costing £4, are available from Little Stoke Cricket Club, or it costs a fiver on the gate at Molineux, the home of Wolverhampton Wanderers.
