Stone Old Alleynians somehow managed to throw away a 3 goal lead against basement club, Wolverhampton Utd, in a bizarre game at Yarnfield.
After 25 minutes, the Old Boys seemed to be cruising against the Wolverhampton side, who held their own in mid-field, but had hardly threatened the home goal. Stone ripped their defence apart thanks to a hat-trick from 17 year old Matt Thomas.
After only 4 minutes, wing-back Grant Bigham tore down the left and his first time cross was met by a volley from Thomas. Number two followed 5 minutes later. This time Josh Renshaw’s superb through ball put Thomas clear for his second. Thomas then glided in his third goal, thanks to another great run by Bigham.
Stone then appeared to stop playing and the match became bogged down in mid-field, until some good football by the visitors enabled them to pull a goal back by Lee Coney before half-time.
Half Time: Stone Old Alleynians 3 – Wolverhampton Utd 1
The lethargy continued from the hosts in the second half, until United scored their second, through Dave Maher. This seemed to stir the Old Boys from their slumber and they started to become an attacking force again.
Danny Heard put Bigham through, but he elected to shoot from a tight angle, instead of passing to the unmarked Billy Thorley. The Alleynians continued to push and after Mike Meszaros had come close twice, Luke Matthews had a shot deflected just past the post.
The Wolves were still in the game though and the Alleynians defence had to be alert to prevent an equalizer. It was Stone though who were creating all the chances and they missed a golden opportunity to finally seal a victory. It was Bigham again whose pace had caused the visitors problems all afternoon.
Bigham ran down the flank and cut the ball back to Heard, who, faced with the goal at his mercy, blasted it over the crossbar. The Alleynians were then made to pay for these misses, as Wolverhampton equalized through Meher’s second goal a few minutes from full-time.
