Stone Dominoes LFC pulled off a big upset and marched into the fourth qualifying round of this season’s Women’s FA Cup when they beat Kettering Town Ladies 3-2 after extra time on Sunday at Wellbeing Park in Yarnfield.
Reward for the against-the-odds victory is a match at Coventry City Ladies on 8th November.
After a minute’s applause for Jordan Burndred, the Leek Town academy player who sadly passed away at the age of 17 after suffering cardiac arrest, Stone got off to a flier, taking the lead against opposition who are two leagues above them after just 12 seconds, with Mollie Prime latching on to a long ball and smashing the ball into the net. Stone kept their lead until the break, although Kettering were starting to show signs of their class.
It was no surprise when Kettering equalised just after half time and again started to make the Dominoes work off the ball. They took the lead soon after.
Stone really had to dig in and give it maximum effort and with just 10 minutes left, Tammi Bennett controlled and fired past the keeper to give Stone the equaliser they had been pushing for. Stone were on top and with the brilliant support on the sidelines it lifted the team even more. Stone could have finished the game off in normal time when Hannah Perry came close to scoring but extra time it was.
Extra time came and Stone were really in the driving seat as Kettering began to tire. Stone grabbed a famous victory with a goal from Lauren Ward.
Mollie Prime received player of the match for a quality game as striker, not only a valuable asset when going forward but also tracking back when the team needed to defend.
