Stone pupils at cross-country event

Pupils from Stone’s middle schools took part in the Stafford and District cross-country championships, with Walton Priory Middle School and Christchurch Academy sending teams to the event at Stafford Grammar School.

The annual championships see young people from  Stone and Stafford race in four age groups in qualifiers for the Staffordshire championships. On a sunny autumnal day 260 young people from across the borough took part.

Winner – Max Cuthbut

Walton Priory were dominant in the boys’ Year 7 race by gaining 1st, 2nd and 3rd places, with Max Cuthbut being the overall champion and gaining his place in the borough team for the Staffordshire championships.

Molly Shermer and Iris Davies continued their primary school rivalry in the Year 7 girls race, with Molly from Walton High School being victorious this time. After previous years’ successes in the girls’ races, Blessed William Howard Catholic High once again proved dominant in the first three positions of the Years 8 and 9 girls’ races, with Elisha Walker winning and Ellie Baxter gaining a third place.

Walton High school also gained a first place in the Years 8/9 boys race, with Harry Redford winning, but he was pushed hard by King Edward VI’s Josh Wilson. Luke Owen from Wolgarston took the bronze medal.

King Edward VI and Stafford Sports College took podium places in the boys Years 10 and 11 race. Jason Edge (KES) was first, James Russell (SSC) second and Adam White (SSC) in third. Alice Burnhope from St Dominic’s School in Brewood was winner in the girls’ race.

Steve Glover, Stafford and Stone School Sport Partnership development manager, said, “I was delighted with the turnout of nearly 300 young people. All young people gave their very all and represented their schools with great pride. The standard was as high as ever and we look forward to providing a strong district team to take part in the county championships.”
