Stone residents left confused as road closure signs imply they’ll be locked out for 2 weeks

Residents of Stone’s Aston Lodge have been left baffled as signs erected on the estate’s loop road warn of a two-week closure for roadworks.

The estate is accessed by Aston Lodge Parkway, which then is split into a loop around the estate, comprising Mercer Avenue and Sadler Avenue. Earlier this month, Staffordshire County Council’s Highways team placed road closure signs on each of these loop branches – leaving many residents confused about how they would leave and return to their homes.

Aston Lodge Road ClosureAfter residents contacted A Little Bit of Stone, we made enquiries with the Staffordshire County Council press team to see whether they could shed some light on what was happening!

In a statement to A Little Bit of Stone, David Williams, Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport at Staffordshire County Council explained that these are works that have been brought forward:

“The highways works at Aston Lodge are part of our preventative work and will help to extend the life of the road and keep it in good condition. The scheme is part of a wider £30 million investment we are making In our roads over the next two years.

“These initial works, due to start on Wednesday, 28 February, will allow crews to complete pre-patching works ahead of the main surface dressing later this year.  To make sure the work can be carried out safely the road will be temporarily closed, however, access for residents will be maintained throughout the works.”

The works details are now on the One.Network website, although at the time of writing, the dates haven’t yet been updated:

Incompetence and probably not in accordance with legal requirements. The contactor involved should face some action. Perhaps it was controlled by Councils AI document procedure which needs modifying. Whats to stop this happening again .

I was one who went to Stafford in the morning from the estate and returned found the road to estate blocked with no information notice to be seen.

I leave before 7 am in the morning and return around 17.30pm. I know work needs to be carried out to improve the roads, has long we can access around the works on Aston lodge park to get home safely, but communication has to improve to stop confusion.

It’s another example of poor communications by the Staffordshire Highways. Does nobody managing the process stop to think that signage such as this needs better communication and explanation? Of course the roads need maintaining but Staffs Highways seem to give precious little thought to keeping local residents informed. There was another recent example of signage which warned of road closures for this estate absolutely no effort on the part of Staffs Highways to communicate any details.
