Stone Hockey Club 1st XI’s six-match winning run came to an end at the weekend when they lost 3-0 at home against league leaders Stourport.

The Enson Lane side started brightly and created several chances. Matt Holmes went narrowly wide having controlled a defence-splitting aerial ball from Jonathan Allchin and further first-half opportunities followed for Stone, both from short corners and in open play. However, Stourport’s goalkkeeper stood firm and Stone were unable to capitalise. Stourport always looked threatening in possession and took the lead with a powerful strike after an initial shot from a penalty corner was saved.

Stone enjoyed a good spell of possession early in the second half and Allchin nearly netted from a penalty corner. However, Stourport extended their lead minutes later from close range and although Stone continued to battle they were unable to break down the away team’s defence. In the end Stone were left to rue their missed chances and Stourport sealed the points with a well-executed drag flick from a short corner.
